Deadline Approaching for The Meningococcal Vaccine
Students have noticed that they are required to receive the Meningococcal Vaccine in order to continue to attend classes, including here at the University of St. Francis. While it may be a hassle to receive the vaccine at such short notice, there is a primary reason to receive the vaccination.
According to the Illinois State Department of Health, Meningococcal disease is a rare but dangerous disease that strikes healthy young people without warning. It can cause Meningitis and Sepsis. Meningococcal infections can be treated with antibiotics but even with treatment, about 10 to 15% of people who get sick will die. Another 10 to 20% will survive but suffer lifelong disabilities such as hearing loss, loss of arms or legs, or brain damage.
Before attending school this upcoming Fall, students that are in seventh grade and below are required to receive one dose of the Meningococcal Vaccine and from seventh to twelfth grade, students are required two doses. The booster is required because protection from the vaccine decreases over time.
USF students are required to receive the Meningococcal Vaccine and provide documentation that they have received it to the Counseling and Wellness Center by September 2. In order to receive the vaccine in USF, the cost is $105. There are alternatives to receive the vaccine, such as receiving it from a primary care physician. Since the deadline is fast approaching, students can receive the vaccine at any local Walgreens or CVS by bringing proof of insurance in order to receive it the same day. Depending on the coverage of insurance, students would only need to pay a copay or it will be free.
If students do not meet the deadline, there will be a medical hold on their account for $25. If students have certain allergies, such as eggs, they can bring the documentation to the Counseling and Wellness Center as soon as possible to remove the requirement from their record.
