The entire Joliet area is swept with World Series fever, Game 7 of the MLB World Series is decided tonight between the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs and in honor of that, the religion beat this week will feature a little bit of baseball.
Four years ago, the Catholic Athletes for Christ reached out to the Diocese of Joliet Vocations and Reverend Burke Masters to be the volunteer chaplain of the Chicago Cubs. As volunteer chaplain, Masters hold mass for both teams before Sunday games and as an added bonus he and the staff of the Diocese get to attend the game for free. After mass, Master usually hangs out in the dugout and the locker room if anyone wants to have a chat or a pre-game prayer.
“It really opens up some nice conversations. Even though they may not be attending Mass, they know that somebody is trying to care for their spiritual needs,” Masters told the Joliet Patch.
When Master was younger, he was an aspiring baseball player but his calling to God was too strong. He said this when asked about the outcome of the game.
“What I pray for is that they all play to their ability. Honestly, I don’t think God cares who wins,” he said. “If everybody plays to their ability, usually the best team wins.”
