Third Annual “Pumpkin Pitch” to be held at Lewis University

Instead of leaving your carved Halloween pumpkins to rot and thrown out, have a little more fun tossing your jack-o-lanterns away this year. According to the Herald News, Lewis University, partnered with Will County Land Use Department, will be hosting their third annual "Pumpkin Pitch" on Saturday, November 5.

Guests can bring their pumpkins to this event and instead of throwing pumpkins right into the garbage, you can have them shredded to become compost. The compost will be a supplement for future crops, gardens and pumpkin patches in the area. The physics students at Lewis University will be bringing a catapult so guests have the option to really toss their pumpkin away.

“This event reinforces what Lewis University students are already learning from the university’s year-round composting program” stated Jaclyn Boyle, facilities coordinator for sustainability and administration at Lewis University. The university began to collect food scraps at their school in 2013, which, instead of being dumped into a landfill, will become compost instead.

Guest are allowed to bring up to five pumpkins each. Pumpkins can be plain, carved or painted. Pumpkins with candles in them are not allowed.

The "Pumpkin Pitch" will take place Saturday November 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Lewis University’s main campus located in Romeoville, 1 University Pkwy. The event will be held in parking lot W.
