Trump nomination hurts Illinois Republicans

James Thorpe

On the 8th of November millions of citizens in Illinois will go to the polls to help elect a President, Governor, comptroller and other government positions. The two main parties: The Republicans and Democrats will be vying for more power not only nationally but also within the state. Nationally it appears the “maverick” Donald Trump is making his Presidential race very close with his hot-headed actions but for others his antics have had a negative impact on their campaigns. It appears that in Illinois he will cost the republicans US senate seats and the office of Comptroller because many simply believe that the Democrat running in these races will simply be anti-Trump by manner of political party affiliation. In the race for Senate, Tammy Duckworth (a Democrat) is leading her Republican challenger by 13.3% according to a poll from realclearpolitics.com. In the race for Comptroller current Lt. Governor Sheila Simon is trailing behind the woman holding the seat currently, Judy Baar Topinka by about 33% of the vote. Many voters in swing areas of the state have reported to be more inclined to vote against the republicans because they have lost faith in the party because of their presidential nominee. It will be interesting to see if these polls turn out to be correct and how the national races will affect those in the state in the long-term.
