Trinity Services Horticulture Program Kicks Off Fall Sale
The Trinity Services Horticulture Program, located at 100 N. Gougar Road in Joliet, launched their annual fall sale on this past Thursday, September 7. Trinity Services is a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization that aims to provide those with disabilities and mental illnesses the highest quality, personal services to allow them to live an enriching life. Trinity was founded in 1950, here in Joliet. As Trinity's impact on the people they helped grew, so did their name. Trinity has a presence now in 31 Illinois communities in Will, Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Madison, Peoria, Jackson and St. Clair counties, as well as in Reno, Nevada. Trinity's Horticulture Program is one of the most innovative of Trinity's services and aims to help those with intellectual and developmental disabilities through gardening. By planting, tending, watering, and more, those who work within the program develop their motor skills as well as their self-esteem. The greenhouse, where they do most of their work, is easily accessible to everyone. Trinity actually encourages those with or without a disability to come and help tend to their outdoor gardens and indoor greenhouse. Because of their indoor greenhouse, this program runs year long. This is important because the participants get to see their plants grow, just as they are within the Horticulture Program. Some of the plants grown are food and seeds, which participants get to pick and try themselves. However, they do tend to many other plants and open sales to the public for these arrangements. Their two major sales are in the fall where they sell mums, and spring, when they debut displays of flowers. As of this past Thursday, mums are not the only thing you can purchase from the Horticulture Program. As listed in the Joliet Patch, the participants this season will also be preparing asters, a variety of baskets, straw bales, corn stalks, and other decorative arrangements. Prices for these plants range from $4-$25. These sales go towards benefiting the men and women who participate in this program. Stop by their greenhouse, off of Route 30, to purchase a plant from 8 am- 4 pm on Mondays- Fridays.
