Archbishop of Canterbury baffled by Christians who back Trump
On Sunday, November 26, the archbishop of Canterbury, England’s top religious authority said he does not understand why so many Christians in the United States support President Donald Trump.
Archbishop Justin Welby spoke on local television program, Peston on Sunday, and said how he cannot comprehend how individuals of Christian faith have created such a strong base of support for Trump.
He said on the show, referring to the support Trump has accumulated, especially from so-called Evangelical Christians, "No, I don't understand it. I really genuinely do not understand where that is coming from."
University of St. Francis student, Rachel McMurray, agrees with the archbishop and stated, “It’s so odd to me that Christian’s around me, especially in class, agree with Trump. He says such horrible, demeaning things about others, it kind of undermines Jesus’s ‘love thy neighbor as yourself’ teaching.”
Although he disagrees with Trump, Welby noted that he’s met with worse people than the president of the United States and would still be civil towards him.
The archbishop is still willing to attend a state dinner in Trump’s honor if the president came to Britain on an official visit. He said part of his job is to meet with people he disagrees with "and to testify with the love of Christ to them and to seek to draw them in a different way."
Trump has accepted an invitation for a state visit to Britain, however no date has officially been set.
