Gun Violence in Joliet
Joliet,IL- Joliet has recently been shocked by instances of gun violence. According to the Herald News, a 27-year-old Joliet man was shot in the head and killed on South Ottawa Street early Sunday, police said.
Shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday, officers heard multiple gunshots fired to the southeast of their location near Des Plaines and DeKalb streets, Joliet Police said in a news release.
The Joliet Police headed there and police dispatch received a call of a person shot on South Ottawa between McDonough and Wallace streets. The officers located the wounded man, identified as Eugene Holmes, inside a residence and began to administer aid until fire department paramedics arrived, police said.
"The paramedics arrived on scene but were unfortunately unable to revive the victim and he succumbed to his injuries," police said. According to the Joliet Patch, Joliet Police said other people were inside the house on South Ottawa Street but none of the others were injured by the gunfire.
"The early stages of the investigation indicates that an unknown vehicle pulled up near the residence. Several people exited the vehicle and shot up the residence multiple times," Joliet Police announced.
According to the Patch, Sunday morning's homicide is the latest in a series of violent shootings across the city. The Joliet Police Department is asking for the community's help, particularly with video surveillance cameras, in connection with Thursday night's west-side shooting that killed one juvenile and injured two others. The Will County Coroner's office identified the deceased victim as 13-year-old Javier Cayetano of Joliet.
Cayetano sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the Thursday night shooting, according to the coroner's office.
Joliet Police issued a press release mid-morning Friday explaining that the shootings were called in at 7:43 p.m. in the 300 block of South May Street, which is the Reedswood area.
According to the Patch, another Joliet Police said that two men, ages 20 and 30, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds on Friday evening when someone opened fire on their car. The shootings occurred at 4th Avenue and Union Street around 5 p.m. while it was still light out.
According to Deputy Chief of Police Darrell Gavin, officers responded to the call of a shooting but no victims were located. The two shooting victims turned up several minutes later at Presence Hospital "with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds."
According to Gavin, "neither victim could identify the shooter. Both victims were treated and released. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing."
