Forest Preserve Earth Day Activities
The Forest Preserve District of Will County has many different events to celebrate Earth Day this month. The official date of Earth Day is on April 22.
The president of the Earth Day Network, Kathleen Rogers stated on earthday.org that Earth Day is now a global event each year, and they believe that more than one billion people in 192 countries now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.
The Earth Day activities below are provided by the Will County Forest Preserve's website.
One event will be were anybody can donate to recycle their old bikes. It will then be refurbished for kids and others in the area and abroad. Bikes can be in any form of condition. The event "Recycle Your Bicycle" will take place at Monee Reservoir in Monee Township at 6 A.M. till 5 P.M. on Tuesday, April 16 through Sunday, April 28.
The community can learn how to make a worm bin and care for it so that the worms can turn your kitchen scraps into compost. The "Worm Bin Workshop" will take place at Plum Creek Nature Center from noon till 3 P.M. on Saturday, April 20. Ages 10 and older are able to attend with a cost of $3 per person. The Forest Preserve stated that each person needs to bring in their own container to receive 250 starter worms. Acceptable containers are a 10-gallon bucket or a 16” x 24”x 8” deep clean bin. Registration is required. Sign up by Wednesday April 11 on reconnectwithnature.org.
Celebrate Earth Day by making a visit to Monee Reservoir and help keep the preserve free of trash. Fishing line, as well as other debris, poses serious threats to wildlife. Animals often become entangled in the line or can swallow hooks or bits of plastic. The event "Fishing for Trash" will take place on Tuesday, April 23 through Sunday, April 28 from 6 A.M. till 5 P.M. There will be a concessions window to pick up a trash bag and gloves to fill the bag with trash. Return the bag to receive a free gift.
The Forest Preserve is also hosting a "River Shoreline Cleanup" event. To find more information about the event, you can read my post about the event.
